Project Story

The Cornell Dairy Plant serves as a teaching facility for undergraduate and graduate students majoring in food science, and is used for dairy research and production. According to the university, dairy production is approximately 530,000 liters. With such a large facility for food research and dairy production, a sustainable, hygienic, and easy-to-clean material was chosen, hence the selection of stainless steel for the facade to meet environmental requirements.

The project features over 13 tons of custom-made, laser-manufactured welded stainless steel beam flanges. The stainless steel structural sections support the glass facade and are finished with 240 grit gravel as required by building codes. The structure consists of 42 beams, each 30 feet long. The consulting team worked together to ensure that production, polishing, and delivery to Cornell University within the allocated 10-week production period met the project deadlines.
